RISE2020 A Conference With A Conscience

Updated: Nov 8

A stellar line-up of some of real estate’s top performers will gather in Melbourne next April to put their weight behind a new initiative to support good mental health.

RISE2020 is more than just a real estate conference. It’s a conference with a conscience. Proceeds from the event will go towards seed funding for a mental health resource for the real estate industry in Australia and New Zealand that will work to provide education, prevention and intervention.

The star-studded speaker line up so far announced includes Tim Costello, Jessica Rowe, Tom Panos, Susan Alberti, Phil Harris, Dr Fred Grosse, Samantha McCarthy and Kate Strickland. Every speaker has a tale to tell of resilience and well being that is deeply connected to their career success. The theme of the conference is mastery, wellness and inspiration

“With so much emphasis on performance in real estate, mental health is a major issue in the real estate industry and its time we started sharing our stories of dealing with the knocks and building our support bases,” said Chris Hanley, event founder and director of First National Byron Bay.

The 2017 Revive research showed 35% of surveyed real estate professionals have sought medical advice for work-related stress, while 25% said they had experienced physical symptoms from burnout. Meanwhile, new analysis from Deloitte Insights shows that for every $1 invested in workplace mental health, the median yearly return was $1.62, a figure that rises to $2.18 for programs that have been in place for three years or more.

“We need to change the conversations away from winning at any cost in real estate towards the behaviour that builds us as connected human beings,” Chris said.

“This will improve the quality of professionalism in our industry, the quality of our relationships with our clients and most importantly, the quality of the relationships that we have with our families and coworkers.”

The first RISE conference was held in Christchurch this year with funds going towards the victims of the New Zealand Muslim massacre. The event was such a success, a commitment was immediately made for Melbourne to host the 2020 event.

The conference itself is being run by a volunteer committee with industry speakers donating their services.
